North Wales Police have renewed their appeal to find the mother of a baby girl whose body was discovered on the Bangor coastline on 27 September. An update issued at 1.54pm on 1 October said a post-mortem had been completed. Police said initial indications suggested the baby may have been in the water for up to a few weeks, with further tests underway.

A direct line for the mother

On 2 October police set up a phone line specifically for the baby's mother, staffed at all times by a specialist team. Superintendent Llinos Davies urged her to call or text 07974 241223, saying she would speak to a trained specialist and be treated with compassion, dignity and respect. Police say the number is only for the mother to seek help. Officers are also appealing to people who regularly walked in the Siliwen Road and Ashley Fields areas of Bangor between 30 August and 27 September, and for photos or videos taken around the Menai Strait shoreline at Siliwen in that period to be uploaded to the police Major Incident Public Portal. Police have asked people not to speculate about the circumstances.

Mother urged to seek support

Superintendent Llinos Davies said the mother’s welfare and safety remained the force’s priority. Police said information identifying a possible mother would be handled discreetly. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board also appealed for her to come forward so she could receive medical care and support. The circumstances of the baby’s death remain unconfirmed.

How to contact the investigation

Anyone with information can call 101 and quote Operation Melex, or contact investigators through the police Major Incident Public Portal. The health board’s Peoples Enquiry and Resolution Service can also be contacted on 03000 851 234, Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm.
