Match report

Kion Etete scored Newport County’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with York City at Rodney Parade on Saturday 17 October, opening his account for the Exiles after coming off the bench. Ollie Pearce had put York ahead early on. York then lost Jovan Malcolm to a first-half red card, leaving Newport with a long spell against ten men. County’s own report says the draw extended Newport’s unbeaten league run.

A substitute makes the difference

Hayden Mullins introduced Etete in the second half, and the forward headed in Tanatswa Nyakuhwa’s cross. Newport’s report describes it as Etete’s first touch for the club. API-Football records Pearce’s goal in the fourth minute, Malcolm’s dismissal in the 24th and Etete’s equaliser in the 54th. The early lead and dismissal had left York protecting a one-goal advantage for much of the opening period.

More attempts, but no winner

API-Football records 17 Newport attempts to York’s 11, but only three County shots on target. York put one attempt on target. Newport also won the corner count 6-0. The same feed gives Newport 52% possession against York’s 48%. Expected goals were much closer: 1.04 for County and 1.09 for York. Newport’s higher shot count therefore did not produce a larger expected-goals total in that provider’s model.

Rotherham next

The club said the point left Newport 11th and one point outside the play-offs at the end of Saturday’s match. Newport’s 19 October announcement confirms an away game at Rotherham United on Tuesday 20 October, kicking off at 7.45pm. County go into that next fixture after a home draw in which 17 attempts and 52% possession brought one goal.
